A Letter from Chief Jim O'Brien and our President Craig Ackerman
The Noroton Fire Department is 100% Volunteer and we are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year and ready to lend assistance to you, the members of our community.
Although we receive a small operational budget from the town, it is not enough to keep our doors open. We thrive through your generous donations. Your dollars are used for three primary reasons: to help us maintain and upgrade our over 60 year old fire house, to buy new equipment and to fund advance training opportunities for our members.
Firefighters as a group are not very good at asking others for the additional financial help, yet your support is critical to us!
For those that do not know, the Noroton Fire Department is one of three independent volunteer fire departments in the town of Darien. The town of Darien is one of the last towns in Fairfield County that has a 100% volunteer fire and rescue service. This brings one obvious advantage to our residence- millions of dollars saved on salaries, benefits and pension liabilities, and it also brings other benefits. Those who come to assist you are your friends and neighbors. Whether it is a carbon monoxide detector beeping for no apparent reason in the middle of the night or a fully involved structure fire, we respond, because you are members of our community, not our employers.
When a natural disaster strikes, the Noroton, Noroton Heights, and Darien Fire Departments can mobilize over 100 Connecticut State certified firefighters to come to your need all at No Charge!
This year we were out in force during Super Storm Sandy and Winter Storm Nemo and we will continue to be out for you!
We truly need your tax deductible donations. Since the Noroton Fire Department is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, we gladly accept matching gifts. If you have any questions regarding our non-profit status or matching gift program, please contact us at email@example.com. As always, please remain safe and thank you for your support.
With warmest regards,
Alan Hyatt, Chief
Andy Ham, President
How can you help us?
We have a training facility on Ledge Road; however We are always in need of vehicles to train with for fires, extrication, and other vehicle accidents. If you have a vehicle that is no longer usable to you, it can be donated to the fire department for a tax deduction (standard Blue Book Value)
Thinking about tearing down your home to build a new one? The fire department would love to have the opportunity to use the home before it’s torn down to use for training. There is a tax deduction benefit for this; just check with your tax professional. Financially: The Noroton Fire Department is a 100% volunteer firefighting organization, and we are only partially funded by the Town of Darien.
Annual fund drive campaign:
We mail to all of the property owners in our district. The letter goes out in the fall, and this is one of our major fund raisers. We manage this fund raising all on our own, so 100% of your donation goes to the fire department, there is no money paid to outside fund raising companies.
Annual Boat Raffle:
The annual raffle of a boat, motor, and trailer and several other prizes starts in April, and the drawing is held at the Annual Block party which is always the last Saturday in June.
Annual Block Party:
An event that was started at our 100th Anniversary in 1996 has become a staple of the community where we offer food, drink, and entertainment! We do not charge any admission fee to the event, and we keep our food and drink prices very reasonable. The Block party is held every year on the last Saturday in June.
Steak and Eggs Fund Raiser:
Thanks to our friends at Chuck’s Steak House our Annual Steak and Eggs fund raising brunch continues on! The event is held right near Easter, and the price is right! Your adult ticket includes a $10 gift certificate to Chuck’s Steak House, and the meal includes: Steak and Eggs, Pancakes, Bacon, sausage, muffins, hash browns, a complimentary Mimosa or Bloody Mary, coffee, tea, and soda.
NFD Golf Outing:
The Noroton Fire Department holds an annual golf outing open to the public. This extremely popular event has been tentatively scheduled for August. Please check back with us for more details on particiapting or sponsoring a hole!
